SHINER... What??

Every year, faculties and departments at the University of Ottawa join the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa’s major philanthropic initiative, Shinerama. Shinerama is a nation-wide initiative to raise money for people affected by cystic fibrosis (CF), the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. CF is a multi-organ disease affecting primarily the lungs and the digestive system. In the lungs, CF causes severe breathing problems. A build-up of thick mucus makes it difficult to clear bacteria and leads to cycles of infection and inflammation. In the digestive tract, CF makes it extremely difficult to digest and absorb adequate nutrients from food.

When Shinerama first started in 1964, the life expectancy of a person with CF was 4 years. As a result of the funds raised for CF, the average life expectancy has risen to 37 years! This year our goal at the University of Ottawa is $100,000 and we are confident with the participation of students we will reach this goal! Shine Day, September 8th, is a day-long fundraiser where thousands of students take to the streets of Ottawa using their talents to help raise money for CF research.  Whether it's shining people's shoes, playing an instrument, building a human pyramid, or selling candy, our students raise thousands of dollars for Shinerama in a matter of hours - while making friends and having fun in the process.  Past 101ers often say that Shine Day was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of their 101 Week.

Each year the Faculty of Science distinguishes itself by having one of the highest participation rates during Shine Day on campus.  Help us continue that tradition and make real progress in the fight against cystic fibrosis.

The Shinerama pledge form can be downloaded HERE.  The student who raises the most money on their own for Shinerama will receive $2500 towards their tuition!

Hope to see you there!!
