Science Student’s Association’s Equity Statement

The University of Ottawa and the Science Students’ Association (SSA) are located on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe territory. As settlers on this land, we must work to decolonize this space through actively challenging the colonialist and racist norms that govern our ways of being.

The SSA stands against all forms of discrimination and aims to demonstrate a commitment to equity through its actions. We commit to active inclusion of all students and welcoming those of all identities and lived experiences. We strive to ensure that the SSA and the Faculty of Science are creating environments that celebrate the diversity of our student population.

We recognize that many students face systemic barriers both within and beyond academia, and our commitment to equity is rooted in listening to student voices and responding with care and accountability to address these issues. Through hosting accessible events, providing information about access features and limitations of our programming, and offering accommodations, we aim to create spaces that all Science students are able to join.

Have you ever felt unseen, unheard, or excluded? Do you have any questions or concerns? We want to hear from you! The SSA invites feedback from all students to ensure that we are creating an environment that is shaped by all voices. Anonymous feedback can be given in the form linked here, and office hours with the Vice President of Equity are offered to support Science students with equity concerns. We commit to listening to student needs and continually working to foster inclusive environments.

We know this work is ongoing, and we welcome accountability. The SSA is committed to transparent communication and continuous learning as we work to build a more just and inclusive space in the Faculty of Science.
