THEME:

Biological Science and Society

The intersection of arts and science is vital. As researchers continue to explore our changing landscape through a scientific lens, a vital role for artists becomes one to express these data and knowledge, and make complex issues accessible. The role of science in society has never been more important than it is today. We currently possess more data about the natural world than we have at any other point in history. Yet, our natural world is going through its worst crises: we are facing the sixth mass extinction, rapid biodiversity loss, all compounded by the climate emergency.

The University of Ottawa's Science Student Association is exploring the theme of ‘Science and Society’ with an emphasis on biological sciences, and are seeking creators to tell this story through a mural. We encourage creators to focus on the positive contributions of biological science science.

Undergraduate science student artist(s) from the University are invited to propose a painted mural to be installed as a mural in the stairwell of the BioSciences Complex (see pictures below). We expect to select 3 artists who will each paint one mural (one artist per mural per floor).

Outside view of the stairwell of the BioSciences Complex

Available wall space for a mural is approximately 9 × 9 square feet.

The dimensions for proposals are approximately 9 × 9 square feet as there is more space bordering this area that could be used for background colouring if needed. The installation is scheduled to take place over Easter weekend (March 29-April 1 2024) or between April 12-31 2024. Murals must be completed by April 31 2024. As this location is indoors, submissions may consider use of a variety of materials.

The total project budget, including fees and materials is $2500.

To prepare submissions, the committee is inviting candidates to an open house session on Thursday February 15 from 16:00-18:00 on the second floor of the Bioscience building, where artists are encouraged to meet with the committee and learn more about their vision for this space.

ELIGIBILITy

Artists may apply as individuals or a team of artists; however, the budget will remain at the same. Artist(s) are preferred to be current undergraduate science students enrolled at the University of Ottawa and be available to paint during the specified dates.

Artist(s) representing equity deserving communities are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information please email academic@ssa-aes.com.
